This article analyzes the poem “Himnos nacionales” by José Antonio Mazzotti who is part of the 1980’s generation of Peruvian poetry. By following the categories of “linearity” and “thickness” developed by Antonio Cornejo Polar, the poem can be read as a cohabitation of contradictions, traditions and resources that gives to the exiled subject the experience of heterogeneous voices. In the case of “Himnos nacionales” a main part of this experience involves the consequences of the armed conflict that Peru endured in the last decades of the twentieth century.

“Ownership, Authorship, and the Question of Purity in Júrame que te casaste virgen by Beatriz Escalante”

This essay examines Escalante’s novel as an example of postmodern pastiche and situates it in the context of “literatura light,” a term coined by critics in Mexico to diminish the value of best selling fiction by women.  It considers how Escalante uses her novel to comment on the challenges of writing in a globalized economy, where the demand for original creative work by authors is counterbalanced by many readers’ desire for familiar genre fiction.

“Ramón Díaz Eterovic and the Latin American Detective Narrative”

This interview presents an overview of the novels of Ramón Díaz Eterovic (1956), a prominent Chilean writer and one of the leaders of the Generation of 1980, who has successfully utilized detective fiction to provide insightful social commentary on contemporary Chile.  The authors explore the transposition of Díaz Eterovic’s works to a popular television series, “Heredia & Asociados”, and their connection with novels written by distinguished Latin American writers such as the Argentinean Mempo Giardinelli and the Cuban Leonardo Padura Fuentes.

The Secrets of the Era: the Rhetoric of Silence on Responsibility and Guilt in Mario Vargas Llosa’s  La fiesta del Chivo.

Vargas Llosa’s novel, La fiesta del Chivo can be read as a secret history of Trujillo’s era as it undermined intimacy and corrupted human values. The novel’s plot unfolds according to ethical premises: monstrous evil is willfully concealed by a degraded society, which is forced to come to terms with its own degradation by the pangs of conscience of its agents. I propose a reading of La fiesta del Chivo from two complementary perspectives: Mikhail Bakhtin’s ideas about fundamental crises of contemporary action and ethics will allow me to read the novel as a narrative field of unresolvable conflict; and Jacques Derrida’s preoccupation with the ethics of the mortal will help me to consider the encounter of ethics and ontology which takes place in the text. In light of Bakhtin’s and Derrida’s perspectives, I will discuss the humiliation of the protagonist Urania Cabral at the hands of her father, the artistic representation of the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo and the life under his rule, and the assassination plot against the dictator by his guilt-ridden associates as expressions of the hidden and most terrifying characteristic of dictatorship: the interwoven dehumanization of public and private life.

“Living Theory: Representing Lives in Norma E. Cantú’s Canícula

This article underscores the need for a theory that values lived experiences. In particular, I discuss how Norma E. Cantú’s Canícula can be considered both narrative and theory when read through the lens of post positivist realism. Solidarity between Chicanas is presented as it relates to carving out loving worlds where each of us listens and learns (Bridge, 353). Finally, the role of writing as agency as envisioned by Brent R. Henze demonstrates that Canícula narrates and theorizes Chicana identity simultaneously.

The “Colloquio llamado matrimonio” is inscribed as a discursive practice of the symbolic order of domesticity related to the emergence of the family as an institution during Renaissance. In this article, I analyze the fundamental statements on “morality of the private sphere and that of the house.” I illustrate how Erasmus of Rotterdam, through his use of the exemplum, legitimates the roles assigned to both husband and wife within the ideology of gender articulated during the Early Modern Period.

Musico-literary Dialogue in Los ríos profundos by José María Arguedas.

Drawing upon his personal experience and knowledge of music, Peruvian writer José María Arguedas incorporated the words in Quechua and Spanish to songs of the Andean world in his writing. This article looks at Arguedas’s best-known novel, Los ríos profundos, and shows how specific songs together and in dialogue create a new musico-literary thread as they continually questions, echo, and respond to one another, even though found in different sections of the novel.
