Masters of Arts

 Sociology Department

The M.A. in Sociology offers two programs of study: The General Sociology Program and the Human Services Program. Both programs are based on sociology core courses that build on sociological concepts, theories, and methods. The applied courses as well include social theories, and their implication for policy and intervention.

HUMAN SERVICES

The Human Services Program is designed to prepare students to work in a variety of human services fields and to offer advanced training to those already employed in human services professions. The Human Services Program offers the student the unique opportunity to specialize in a variety of area including the following: 

Administration and Evaluation

Health and Medicine

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies

Children and Families

Aging

Or Create Your Own Specialization

Students in the Human Services Program are required to complete five core courses:

GENERAL SOCIOLOGY

The General Sociology Program is designed especially for those student preparing for research professions, doctoral studies, or teaching in the social sciences. Areas of specialization include:

Sociology of the Family / Sociology of the Lifecourse

Medical Sociology

Sociology of Organizations

Social Stratification

Social Change

Or Create Your Own Specialization

Requirements

Courses are also available from other departments on related topics such as counseling, individual assessment, women's studies, criminology, cross-cultural studies, public policy and finances, community and urban planning, statistical analysis and program evaluation. Up to 9 credit hours may be taken outside the department. 

Select either a thesis or a comprehensive exam option. The thesis option requires a total of 36 hours (including a six credit thesis). Comprehensive exams requires a total of 36 credit hours and successful completion of the comprehensive exam.
