Frederick Douglass Teaching Scholars
Summer 2002 sponsored by The Frederick Douglass Institute at IUP |
The Frederick Douglass Institute of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is offering summer teaching opportunities to graduate students entering the final year of terminal degree programs and preparing to be college teachers, for the purpose of attracting graduate students from historically underrepresented and underserved populations. Students selected will teach one course during the Intersession, Summer Session 1, or Summer Session 2.
This program is designed to give these graduate students teaching experience and to explore employment opportunities with this university, which is committed to excellence through diversity. This is in keeping with the spirit of Frederick Douglass’ life of public service and the reaffirmation to equity and diversity that the University has made.
Minimum requirements are: master's degree completed or equivalent and currently enrolled in a terminal degree program; academic background in one of the fields taught at Indiana University of Pennsylvania; and at least three favorable letters of recommendation from faculty or professionals in the student’s field, including the student’s advisor. Preferred: experience teaching or as teaching assistant. Scholars will be compensated as temporary faculty, according to the university’s collective bargaining agreement.
Scholars are expected to live in community housing that will be provided at minimal cost and to participate in campus activities. Scholars may also be requested to work with the African American Cultural Center to develop/implement multicultural programming on campus. Priority consideration will be given to applications postmarked by November 16, 2001.
