What will you
gain from a Pan-African Studies Minor?
This multidisciplinary minor helps students enrich
their cross-cultural studies by heightening their awareness of and
sensitivity to cultural diversity and expanding their knowledge of
contributions by persons of African heritage. The Pan-African Studies
Minor is a valuable asset in the increasingly diverse society and is
attractive to employers and graduate schools alike. The Pan-African
Studies Minor gives you:
- A chance to enrich your vision of the world by
experiencing a multidisciplinary program.
- An innovative linking of studies in history,
English, economics, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, geography,
art and political science
- A challenging program to expand your career
opportunities.
- A way to explore yourself through contact with
incredibly rich and diverse cultures.
- An opportunity to study abroad and take part
in exchange programs

Did you know…
that the minor in Pan-African
Studies is only 18 credits?

- that having
a minor in Pan-African Studies complements most majors in the
humanities, social sciences, and human services?
- having a
minor in Pan-African Studies shows employers that you are
sensitive to issues of cultural diversity?
Did you
realize…
- that there
are only two specific required courses for the Pan-African
Studies minor?
- that you
can take the courses of the 18-credit minor in any order?
- that many
of the courses related to Pan-African Studies also fulfill
Liberal Studies elective requirements?
If you have taken two or three
courses related to Pan-African Studies, you might already be well on
your way to completing the minor!
Furthermore, the 18 credits of the
minor can include more than just courses—you could do a relevant
internship, study abroad program, or independent study, too.
How do I
apply for the minor?
If you are
interested in applying for a Pan-African Studies Minor, you should:
1.
Ask your instructor
for a Form of Minor Application. The form is also available at the Dean’s Office of the College of
Humanities and Social Sciences, located at 201 McElhaney and at the
office of the Pan-African Studies Program Coordinator.
2.
Fill in the form and
submit it to the Dean’s Office or to the Program Coordinator.

Have you considered studying abroad?
Come and hear the experiences of IUP students
who studied abroad

in African countries!
Tuesday, November 6, 2007, 8:00-9:00 p.m.
in 107 Weyandt Hall.

The Office of International Affairs wants
you to know
that you can...
study internationally for a semester, a year, or a summer. In many cases,
costs are based on IUP in-state tuition and fees. Financial aid, grants, and
scholarships may be used. Pre-approved classes count toward your degree.
Workshops on study abroad will
be held on October 22 and November 8 at 4 pm in the Office of International
Affairs, Suites on Grant, Lower B-25.
If you are interested in study abroad in
Africa, there are opportunities for IUP students through the ISEP program in
the English-speaking countries of Ghana and South Africa. For more
information contact the Office of International Affairs (724-357-2295,
int-affairs@iup.edu).
Also:
The IUP Department of Biology plans to offer
courses in Southern Africa during Summer 2008. Courses will begin in mid to
late July and end in early August. With this program, you will learn
first-hand about the history, people, ecology and wildlife of this diverse
region through a series of field trips, lectures and guided tours. Contact
Dr. Carl Luciano for more information (luciano@iup.edu,
724-357-2352). Website:
