Virginia Ann Deem Memorial Journalism Scholarship

Journalism majors at IUP are invited to apply now for a $1,000 grant.

Journalism majors who will be juniors or seniors in September 2008 are eligible to apply.

Applicants  must show promise in any field of journalism and have demonstrated superior aptitude, interest, dedication, performance, personal integrity, industry, service and community involvement.

Applicants should  submit a completed application form, a letter with accompanying resume, detailing qualifications, and related experience, to the Secretary,  Journalism Department, 434 Davis Hall, no later than 4 p.m., April 1, 2008.

Finalists may be invited to an interview by the awarding panel.

Scholarships will be awarded during the spring semester, 2008.

The David A. Schwartz Memorial Journalism Scholarship was established in 1979 for the purpose of awarding scholarship grants to worthy journalism students at IUP in keeping with the high personal and professional standards set by David A. Schwartz, the young journalist for whom the award is named.

Established through the generous contributions of Allen and Dorothy Schwartz, parents of David A. Schwartz, of Lebanon, PA., the publishers of The Indiana Gazette and many friends on campus as well as in the larger Indiana community, the award has been given to:

 David A. Schwartz, eldest child of Allen and Dorothy Schwartz, Lebanon R.D., PA., was a journalist in every sense of the word. His interest in the profession started while he was a student at Northern Lebanon High School, where he was an outstanding leader.

He continued his education at IUP, engaging himself in every aspect of journalism and became proficient in both the written and mechanical skills of his craft, topping his university career as editor on The Indiana Penn.

While his work with publications offered him opportunities to meet people off campus, Dave’s variety of interests took him into the Indiana community following other pursuits. He was well-known by many not related to the university or his career field.

Because of his mechanical and editorial skills, Dave found a position upon his graduation in 1976 with the Barnesboro Star. Again, he did it all, from the plates for press. His talents made him a real asset to any newspaper enterprise. As 1976 came to a close, Dave became a member of The Indiana Gazette and was immediately given responsible assignments.

On Feb. 8, 1977, Dave was sent to cover a fire near Clymer. He never returned. En route to his assignment, the vehicle he was operating collided with a coal truck. He was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

Because of his stellar attributes, as a person as well as a journalist, Dave is missed by his co-workers and his friends as well as his parents, brothers ,Thomas and Daniel, and sister Janet.

Dave, 22 at the time of his passing, lived a short life. Because of its promise, his life must not be forgotten.
