Rick Kutz: Summer workshops picking speed

Workshops czar, Rick Kutz said Wednesday that the science workshops at the Summer Honors Program tend to be the workshops with the most attendance. The Summer Honors Program was started five years ago and seems to be picking up speed as it goes. The main goal for the program is that the students walk away with a better idea of how to choose the college they go to. Also, it is hoped that the students have learned what it is like in the particular major they may be interested in.

The idea of the summer program is that each department gives the students a week of what that particular major would be like to take in college.

One of the programs, the economics workshop, had the week segmented, so each day they explored different division of economics, like macroeconomics, microeconomics, or the economics of sport.

Another program, the X-file adventure, looked at the college of health and human services. They explored such professions as nursing, safety science, and the culinary academy here at IUP. The third program, called Born Human, was the psychology workshop. They discussed different types of disorders and focused also on the developmental aspect of psychology. Journalism, the final workshop for this week, learned things like the types and elements of news and  stories, the ethical and legal issues of journalism, and how to put a paper together, from step one to finish.
