Kutz: "IUP Summer Honors program is a real experience"
Rick Kutz, Assistant Director of the Robert E. Cook Honors College, recently reflected on this year's Summer Honors Program.
The Summer Honors Program, which is in its fifth year, offers an opportunity for interested high school students to study on the IUP campus and experience college life. This year 176 students participated in the program, with 111 attending during week one and 65 attending during week two.
Seven classes were offered during week one. They were Why Did the Artist Put the Babies on the Tree, Genetic Engineering, Born Human, The Art of Making Money, The Journalism Workshop, The Real World of Chemistry, The Sound and the Fury, and Self-Marketing
The classes were taught by members of the IUP faculty. The counselors were either recruited by former students or they were approached by the Honors College.
The group attending this week is the largest group to attend the program in its history, partly because younger stundents are now admitted to the program. In addition, students are traveling even farther to attend the program. One student even came from Germany.
This year brought eleven counselors to the Summer Honors Program. Two of them, Head Counselor Shauna Doyle and Heather Hoffman are returning for a second year of the program. Counselors Joanna Stone and Krysta Charlton attended the program as students.
The Summer Honors Program will be back next year, and stronger than ever according to Kutz. "I would like to see the program expanded to include more of IUP so that more departments can be involved. I would like the attitudes to be more like Governors' School than a week of vacation, and have the program move towards a more academic atmosphere," explained Kutz.
"It's a very real experience,"noted Kutz about the IUP Summer Honors Program.
