Society of Professional Journalists Convened: 8 p.m. Present: Anthony Fucinari
Business The Penn – It has been asked that the Penn be completely unaffiliated with the journalism department and the SPJ. There was some discussion about what, if anything, we should do. Loomis is currently drafting a personal letter to Atwater to ask for help for the situation, but it was decided that, currently, a letter on behalf of the whole SPJ would be inappropriate. We talked about whether to continue workshops with the Penn. The general consensus was yes. Elections – All officers except Liz are graduating this year. Anyone interested in a position should let it be known. Publication – Shaun Murphy is starting up an activist zine with the mission statement "Connecting the world to itself and creating a socially conscience community, while bridging the gap to a more global perspective." Kendra's doing the layout, and Rose is editing. They just put together their first issue, but are looking for writers on topics relating to activism, politics, beliefs and such. If interested in finding out more, there's a Facebook group about it called The Seed. Its e-mail address is theseedzine@gmail.com. Shirts – John Price took some pictures that we may or may not use for tee shirts. Brandon suggested using a funny slogan. Bill suggested white on black with newsprint text. The shirts will be journalism department shirts, not SPJ shirts, so that we have a chance at a bigger profit. Indy Week in Review – It won't be on air again until March 25. At that time Bill and Jared (who run it) won't be around, so the show will need both interviewers and people who know how to run the station. Membership – Right now we have 19 official members. Membership is annual, and some people's membership has expired. If you need to know whether or not you're official, e-mail me (Liz) at E.R.Gaffron@iup.edu . If you have sent in your paperwork, but haven't received anything in the mail, contact me. At the end of the semester, we need to file a report with the SPJ that includes our membership numbers. See Dr. Loomis or an officer for the paperwork. Membership is $36 a year, but students receiving financial aid can get it covered by the Sweeney Fund. All they have to do is take proof of financial aid to Dr. Loomis. Diabetes Symposium – Emily has been in contact with Michelle Fryling about the Diabetes symposium, which is now scheduled for Tuesday, April 3. If you are interested in helping with the set up, contact Emily, Bill or Dr. Loomis. Congratulations to Margaret Harper, Melissa Meadath, Amanda McLeod, Micole Kattouf, Lauren McDermott, Andrea Staron, Mirza Zukic, Adeniyi Amadou, Andrew Pizzini, Emily Nichelson-Boots, Matt Carroll, Liz Gaffron and Derek Buck for winning first place in the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association collegiate Keystone Awards in the Public Service/Entreprise category for their work on The Penn's Civic Project. A big thank you to Brandon for working on the Web site ! Now you can satisfy your SPJ fix with photos, contact info, national SPJ info and minutes of meetings past.
Next Meeting – Our next meeting will be held shortly after spring break. More info to come. Adjourned: 8:50 p.m.
