Summer '06 Internships

Kendra Sledzinski

When most college students think of their summer jobs, they groan. But when I think of mine, I smile fondly. I spent my summer interning (and getting paid a nice sum!) at my hometown paper, The Scranton Times-Tribune. I worked in the Lifestyles Department and was shocked at how much I was actually involved in. I had a story assignment on my very first day.

Throughout the summer I wrote a number of feature stories on subjects including MySpace addiction, comic book convention, a local record label and a number of touring bands, just to name a few. I interviewed the likes of Phil Lesh, Joan Jett, Thursday, a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd and several bands on Ozzfest. I also got to cover concerts and festivals like Warped Tour and Ozzfest on deadline, which was a great experience on how to focus on what's important and how to pound out 12 inches of story in 30 minutes or less.

Aside from writing, I did extensive copy editing, attended budget meetings and did some layout, too. To say my skills weren't improved all around would be the biggest lie I could ever tell. I made lasting friendships with some staffers and fellow interns, and left not only with an arsenal of clippings, but also with an even bigger passion for the daily labor that goes into print journalism.
