Monday
A. Introductions: Each student introduces himself/herself. Talks about any experience in high school journalism.
B. Introduction to journalism: What is the role of journalism and the mass media in high schools and society?
C. Introduction to the mass media.
D. Elements and types of news.
E. Elements of style.
C. Assignment: Identify types of news
Tuesday
A. First editorial meeting to plan workshop paper. The workshop paper will be a six-page tabloid. It must be produced by Friday at 7 p.m. Journalism workshop students may have to work late evenings Thursday and possibly Friday.
- Students will draw up a list of story ideas that can be developed into news stories.
- Students will be assigned to suggest a name for the newspaper by Tuesday.
- Students will make initial story assignments.
- Possible story ideas
- Interview with workshop director Rick Kutz
- Interview individual students participating in workshops
- Interview workshop counselors
- Write about student life in the dorms.
- Write about social activities
- Journalism workshop students will also interview each other
- Write about trip to local newspaper
- Beat reporting. All journalism workshop students will be assigned a beat. that is, cover any items of interest during the workshop
- Search the Internet for entertainment and lifestyle stories
- Conduct a survey among all workshop students.
- Write history of the Honors College Summer Workshop at IUP
B. Introduction to the journalism lab.
- Students will learn how create folders and save stories in the file server.
- Students will also learn how to use digital cameras.
C. Practical exercises.
- Students will practice writing stories. First assignment: Students will be asked to type a short article about themselves and their interest in high school journalism.
- They will also learn to use Netscape Composer.
Wednesday
A. Assignment discussion.
- Students will discuss assignment given Monday.
B. Sources of news.
- Students will learn how to identify and build a network of sources of news
- Students will learn how to search for news from the Internet
C. Interviews.
- Students will learn the basic techniques in interviewing
D. News writing.
- Students will learn how to write a lead and the rest of the story.
Thursday
E. Second editorial meeting
Students will appoint managing editor. Will chair editorial meetings for the following purposes:
- final story assignments.
- name of the newspaper.
- appoint page editors, copy editors and picture and graphic editors for each of the six pages.
- appoint online editor who will supervise stories for online publishing.
- appoint workshop photographer responsible for the use and care of the digital camera.
Responsibilities:
Managing Editor (preferably workshop counselor) will be responsible for :
- chairing editorial meetings
- keeping a diary of who is assigned what story
- keeping track of each student's progress in reporting and writing stories
- keeping the digital camera and taking pictures as requested by students.
- enforcing deadlines.
- helping where necessary to schedule interviews.
- arranging to take completed pages to Kinkos to xerox 100 copies.
- arranging to take xeroxed copies to the Saturday meeting with parents.
Page Editor will be responsible for:
- the layout and design of page
- keeping track of students contributing stories to the page
- pictures and graphics for the page
- copy editing stories - for grammar, style, factual accuracy, etc.
Online editor will be responsible for:
- web page story layout and design
- converting stories to Netscape Composer
- keeping all online stories in one folder in the file server
F. Introduction to the Internet; Web publishing and PageMaker
Students will learn how to:
- search the Internet and download pictures and graphics.
- use Netscape Composer to write and link stories.
- use PageMaker to design a page
Friday
A. Third Editorial meeting.
Students will update each other on their progress in their assignments.
B. Editing, layout and design
Students will learn about editing, layout and design
C. Photojournalism
Students will learn how to select and manipulate pictures and images
D. Legal and Ethical issues in Journalism.
Students will learn about their legal rights and responsibilities.
Students will also learn about ethics in journalism
E. Online publishing.
Students will be introduced to the world of online publishing. Monday
Students will work on their assignments
Tuesday
A. Fourth Editorial meeting
B. Visit to a newspaper office
Wednesday
Students will work on their assignments.
Thursday - Friday
A. Fifth Editorial meeting
B. Students work on the newspaper
