IUP’s Journalism Department says braVo!

to Breast Cancer Research and Awareness!

Come and walk with 35 members of the JRNL 481 class, PR in the Public Sector, at noon Oct. 7 in the Oak Grove to show your support for breast cancer research and awareness!

Donations are welcome but not required. Just take a walk with us and hear about our plans to raise money and participate in a fundraising event Oct. 30 at the Joseph Myerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Md.

This class’ project is a perfect example of how public relations lessons in a classroom can easily materialize into a service and experiential learning project overnight.

During the summer, journalism student Rachel McGreal performed an internship at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. One of her many, important responsibilities was to research and plan the hospital’s annual braVo! event. (For more information, please visit http://www.bravolifebridge.org/)

In public relations, events are broken down into four areas: research, planning, execution and analysis. Rachel shared her experiences with the research and planning of the braVo! event, then her supervisors invited her class to witness the execution first-hand and participate as volunteers. The culminating assignment will be to analyze the event overall.

But, the fun didn’t stop there.

The class decided to make an additional lesson out of the plan to get to Baltimore.

As the class discussed things like research, transportation, food, t-shirts and publicity, one student, Jaimie Rising, decided she would approach the Office of Student Learning to see what it had to offer. Long story short, she discovered that Caleb Finegan of the history department heads the Citizenship and Civic Engagement Initiative. In one short meeting with Caleb, it was determined that both the Office of Student Learning and the Citizenship and Civic Engagement Initiative could probably help the class both financially and logistically to get to Baltimore.

Plans are in the works, and the students are engaged.

Please come and support our walk!
