This page is for any other sites that are either influenced by, work in conjunction with, or are just related to the geography and regional planning department in some way.  Enjoy the links and if you have any other links that you know of that belong on here, feel free to contact us and let us know!

  • About.com - From here, Matt Rosenburg will guide you through the wonderful world of geography.  The site includes many subjects, including population, GIS, education, and my personal favorite, the weekly quiz.  So, check it out and see what Matt has to offer!
  • National Geographic Society - This is an obvious one...NGS is responsible for really placing geography "on the map" so to speak in the world of academia and education.  The site is full of links to many articles, TV specials, the latest in geographic technology and many other things that could be helpful and enjoyable to view.
  • National Council for Geographic Education - This web site will provide information on NCGE publications, annual meeting updates, awards programs, and travel programs. Resources include national and state standards for K-12 social studies and geography, an index to publications on geography education research, table of contents for elementary and secondary geography text, and links to other NCGE affiliates.  The NCGE is also housed right down the hall from the department office in Leonard Hall here at IUP.  Dr. Ruth Shirey, one of the department's professors, is the executive director of this organization.
  • The Census Bureau - This site is designed to enable "intuitive" use and is intended to be visually appealing, concise, and quick loading. It was designed so users can effectively locate and utilize the resources the site has to offer, such as the "Population Clock," "Economic Clock" and its small search engine.  It also offers links to large numbers of databases and job opportunities in your area, also very helpful.
  • Pennsylvania Geographic Alliance - Also right down the hall, sharing the office with the NCGE, the Alliance is a state and NGS funded organization whose goal is to prepare teachers for the major task of re-emphasizing geography into the school curriculums across the state.  Through summer institutes and workshops, along with the help of the other government organizations, the Alliance has trained over 250 teachers in the state with the skills necessary to carry out its goal.  Dr. Shirey is the coordinator of this organization as well, along with the NCGE.
