annual GTU induction ceremony with a guest speaker. This year's speaker is Dr.

its own ceremony separate from the main graduation. It is in the morning and
includes a continental breakfast.
Other events....
GTU Meetings - Gamma
Theta Upsilon is the Honorary Geography Fraternity and is an international
organization. The meetings are usually held biweekly and GTU is responsible for many
of the activities in the department.
Colloquiums - The department periodically offers these
sessions as a chance for faculty and students to present research. The series is not
just for geography, but for other related fields like biology, geoscience, and
anthropology just to name a few. They have been held on Friday afternoons during the
semester and refreshments are available.
Field trips - The department sponsors trips to both
local and regional sites. Two years ago, an informal group went to visit a local
watershed to discuss some of the environmental issues in the area and to examine cleanup
efforts taking place. Last March, GTU sponsored a trip to Baltimore led by Dr. John
Benhart, Jr. to look at sprawl issues and planned communities in the Baltimore-Washington
metro area. It included an overnight stay near the famous Inner Harbor. In
April, 2002, Dr. Kevin Patrick led an Urban Geography (GEOG 332/532) field trip to New
York/New Jersey that was open to GARP majors and other interested students. We hope
to have more trips like this in the future and ideas are always welcomed by faculty and
student officers..
