Wheel barrow man jailed for not paying taxes

By Ali Ismael Mohamed –Puntland

A wheelbarrow owner was jailed , after he refused to pay the daily municipal

tax.

Mohamed Bukurow, 32,  was sentenced to jail  yesterday by the local tax officers after he refused to pay a tax of SH2000sh. In his defense he said he ran away two months ago from  the persistent Southern Somalia civil war.

He said  that he can’t afford to pay tax.

He used to deliver goods from the market to the owner’s houses.

That morning he didn’t get anything to deliver for payment and didn’t drink even one

cup  of tea which costs 1000sh.

The tax collectors said that they forgave the detainee twice, but will not allow him this

time to avoid  serving his prison sentence.

Asked why he always refuses to pay the daily tax, Bukurow said that he is

“the poorest member of the community” and the tax “is illegal” to him.
