Hargeisa municipality hands over cleaning services to private garbage collection companies. Most of Hargeisa’s streets are littered with  the waste like  plastics bags and Qat  chew. The main challenge of the new companies will be keeping the street clean.

Speaking during a ceremony  at Monsoor hotel, Somaliland vice president, Mr. Ahmd Yusuf Yasin said “It is very important that we have private companies that will work on the garbage collection and  management in the capital. Sanitation is very essential in our health.”

He also asked Hargeisa municipality council to work closely with the two companies to improve the well-being and appearance of the capital.

Sabowanaag and Dhis Companies, two privately owned entities will be responsible for the overall garbage collection of the capital.

Khaddar Hussein Abdi, executive manager of Sabowanaag, said that they will put a garbage container for every four homes in the city.

The biggest problem of Hargeisa’s waste comes from the Qat, a leafy stimulant that is chewed mostly by  men. The Qat leaves are chewed and spat out on the streets. Another problem are the plastic bags that are also littered throughout  the city.

Somaliland Government has recently banned importation of plastic bags. But there is a local plastic factory now  produces plastic bags.
