Education experts and officials recently discussed the best way of matching different curricula in the informal and formal schools.

They concluded two days of meetings in Maansoor Hotel, Hargeisa, this week during which  they had a long discussion and exchange of ideas to start up plans that will eventually result a single framework for the diversified education curriculums.

The meeting was attended by officials from the ministry of education, national education development center, national examination board and education experts from Somaliland universities and some authors of the national curriculum. International NGOs that support education were also present in the discussion.

The participants analyzed how students of the informal education schools, that are dominant in the rural areas, can be transferred to the school education systems smoothly. Some educationists said that informal schools are effective in some areas, where they said ‘ students of Grade 2 in the informal schools have the mindset or learning skills of Grade 3 in the formal Schools.’

The director general of the ministry of education, Eng. Ali Abdi Odowaa, speaking at the closing ceremony, said; “The ministry of education has officially submitted a national education policy that will govern all education systems of the country – both formal and informal schools – and this meeting is about improving new ways that will tie informal education to the formal system.”

The director paid his tribute to Save the Children/Denmark for their support to the informal schools. He said; “I am very thankful to SCF/Denmark for their hands on the continuation of informal schools. But I ask for them to expand their support to the other regions they have not yet reached, especially in the rural areas.”

International and local NGOs, and UN organizations support Somaliland Ministry of education.
