The Mass Media in Somalia

Since the civil war in Somalia the main broadcast that Somalis  have had  is BBC news twice a day. There are  also several newspapers and radio stations that are actively involved in disseminating news and mobilizing the  community.  In the rural areas people get most of their news from  the BBC and  traditional interpersonal communication network which suit the rural Somali  pastoral and nomadic way of life.

In Garowe people watch TV  in about every four houses. There  are two

Radio stations, Somali broadcasting Corporation (SBC) and Somali Broadcasting Service  (SBS).

Garowe also has a local TV station called Eastern Television Network (ETN) which broadcasts daily local and international news. There are also online and other publications that provide news to Garowe.

I studied the coverage of our media, it mainly focuses on politics, government and

something unique in this country, warlords, unlike other countries Somalia has warlords,

who control parts of the country and they are among top news makers, not necessarily

good news but weather we like it or not they are in position to exercise some sort of

de facto authority which captures media attention.

Religion is a main issue in Somalia that no media can ignore; all Somali mass media

have religious agenda. Health and nutrition are among some social programs routinely

covered in our local press.

Private ownership and the press freedom enabled Somali media to extend their coverage.
