Increase of Food prices, Decrease of US dollar rates and confusion among the population

 By Zamzam Ahmed Hassan

Hargeisa  Somaliland is a small and is emerging country. It is part of what the world called the third world.  Economically is very fragile the only economic Somaliland rely on is the livestock.  The export of the livestock has been very small since the Saudi Arabia banned Somaliland’s livestock. This has produced the highest unemployment in the country.  70% of the people are unemployed and they are depending on the very small numbers who have some kind of employment and the remittance of the Somaliland’s Diasporas who send some money to their love ones back home.

Recently what is unfortunate how the Somaliland’s business people don’t care about their own deprived nation, Last two years the price of the essential food has been rising month by month.  Right now the main crisis is the value of the us dollar has gone down and price of the food is doubled, specially rice and corn flowers which are the two main essential food in the country.  All above these, there is no justification of the rise of the food prices, as there are no increased of government taxations or fuel price increased.

On the other hand it appear there is a confusions within the public, at the same time there is no co-ordination among the public, they don’t know what is their entitlements, also no body is inquiring how and who is responsible for the price increased, who ever can afford to purchase the food is buying it, those can’t afford at all are silent with empty stomach.

Over all the government is liable the day to day running of the country but previously the government was reluctant and never interfered any business struggle that went out of hand, today unexpectedly the government has announced that the government is nothing to do with the price increased, and confirmed there is no tax or fuel price increased. The government blamed the local food stores rather then those who import the food and ordered them to reduce the price of all the essential food, a price that the ordinary people can afford. The public has warmly welcomed the government’s announcement.

I would like to conclude this article with some advice to the business people that you should not only think making profit but also think to help your own deprived nation and at same time look into your country’s economic stage and show a good citizenship.
